Indian Railways website: who the heck designed it?

Have you ever tried to lookup a train between two stations? Indian Railways website is the run away leader (not!) in terms of usability. You need to enter station codes (not city name) to use it and the interface to look it up is totally unusable.

You’re much better off searching for “indian railways station codes” in your favorite search engine.

These guys (and other Indian travel websites) seriously need some AJAX programmers.

IIRC, the website was either designed by the IT arm of the government (I think they are called NIC or something like that) or a private web 0.5 company that bid the lowest amount.

I heard that our employer has been negotiating with the Railways to free the data from the awful UI so that it could be displayed in easier to access ways such as oneboxen. But not it has not happened yet. The Railways are the single biggest ecommerce success story in India. And train related queries form a large portion of traffic. Yet the bureaucracy does not want to free it up.
